On Wednesday, the Chennai Mahila Court declared Gnanasekaran guilty in the sexual abuse case involving Anna University, convicting him on all eleven counts.

The incident occurred in December when a second-year student was assaulted on the university grounds. Following a thorough investigation, the Chennai Police apprehended Gnanasekaran.

Details of the Assault Incident

In December 2024, a 19-year-old student was sexually assaulted at Anna University in Chennai, sparking widespread outrage and becoming a significant political issue in Tamil Nadu.

Gnanasekaran entered the campus on December 23 around 8 PM, where he confronted a senior male student accompanying the victim, forcing him to leave before assaulting the engineering student.

Gnanasekaran, who operated a biryani stall near the university, had a criminal background with 20 prior cases, including theft and break-ins, and had been convicted in six of those.

Public Reaction and Protests

The incident ignited significant anger among students concerned for their safety, leading to protests organized by the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the All India Democratic Women’s Association (AIDWA), who demanded justice for the victim.

Court's Ruling and Political Reactions

Following the verdict, AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi Palaniswami commented, "The court has delivered its judgment today in the sexual abuse case. The AIADMK protested against this incident, and the students' voices were heard. The court's decision, based on the evidence presented, is commendable."

In her complaint to the police on December 23, the victim reported that an unidentified man had threatened and assaulted her while she was conversing with a friend on campus.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin previously stated that his government would support the victim in this case, emphasizing that the accused was arrested promptly to ensure justice.

Government Accountability and Political Criticism

During the Tamil Nadu assembly's first session of the new year, Stalin remarked, "While some members have mentioned the university's name, I choose not to, as it is important to protect its reputation. What happened to this student is unacceptable. Sexual assault is a heinous act, and the legislature has expressed genuine concern over this issue."

Various political factions have criticized the government for its handling of the Anna University sexual assault case, accusing the DMK administration of a slow response.
