New Elevated Corridor Proposal

The Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA) is exploring a plan to construct an elevated corridor similar to the Dwarka Expressway along the Southern Peripheral Road (SPR). If this initiative receives approval, it will facilitate smoother travel between Delhi and the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, eliminating traffic signals and reducing congestion in the city. Officials informed a local media outlet that a consultant has been engaged this year to draft a comprehensive project report for upgrading the SPR from Vatika Chowk to NH-8, with the design for this 5.5-kilometer segment already submitted.

A GMDA representative stated, 'We are currently engaged in thorough discussions, taking into account the infrastructure developments planned for this route. The corridor will be designed to meet not only current demands but also future mobility needs. While we are finalizing the design, the detailed project report is in progress.'

According to the proposal, the elevated corridor will feature six lanes without traffic signals and include ramps for easy entry and exit. It will link the Dwarka Expressway and NH-8 via the existing cloverleaf intersection, as well as connect to the Sohna Highway, which is part of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway (NH-248A) at Vatika Chowk.

This design aims to ensure a continuous flow of traffic from Shiv Murti in Delhi to NH-8 and onward to NH-248A. Likewise, commuters heading towards Delhi from the Sohna Highway will experience a hassle-free journey. Originally conceived in 2019, the project faced delays for several years. In 2022, administrative approval was granted for the construction of eight flyovers and the expansion of the SPR to six lanes, but the plan was abandoned due to insufficient traffic density. A year later, the former Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar instructed the GMDA to revise the design to create an elevated road directly linking NH-248A to NH-8 and the Dwarka Expressway. Chief Minister Naib Singh Saini approved the construction of this elevated corridor in July 2024. The GMDA board has allocated ₹750 crore for the project, with ₹620 crore earmarked for construction and ₹130 crore for land acquisition. Local residents emphasized the urgent need for the redevelopment of the SPR.
