Glenn Phillips Expresses Frustration After Gujarat Titans' IPL 2026 Qualifier Loss
Gujarat Titans' Disappointing Exit from IPL 2026 Qualifier 1
During the post-match press conference following the Gujarat Titans' (GT) defeat to the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in the IPL 2026 Qualifier 1, all-rounder Glenn Phillips displayed visible frustration. The match took place at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on May 26, where the Titans faced a significant 92-run loss.
The Titans were unable to secure a direct spot in the finals after being set a daunting target of 255 runs. They were bowled out for just 162 runs in 19.3 overs, despite a commendable innings from Rahul Tewatia, who scored 68 runs off 43 balls, hitting 8 fours and 4 sixes at a strike rate of 158.14.
Jos Buttler also contributed with a quick 29 runs from 11 balls, including 4 fours and 2 sixes, but the team's momentum faltered after the top-order batsmen were dismissed.
Phillips Reacts to Controversial Question
After the match, Phillips faced a challenging question from a reporter regarding whether the Titans had 'mentally given up' after seeing RCB's impressive total. The question caught him off guard, leading to a moment of disbelief followed by a sarcastic laugh. His mood quickly shifted to annoyance as he labeled the question 'silly' and 'terrible.'
"That’s a terrible and silly question. We went out there, we gave it everything. Unfortunately, when you’re trying to chase 250, everything has to go right. And we went out there to try and make everything go right, and obviously it didn’t," Phillips stated.
GLENN PHILLIPS ANGRY ON A REPORTER QUESTION Q️ - "GT had mentally given up after seeing RCB score 254 ?". Phillips️: called it a “terrible & silly question,” saying no professional cricketer ever walks onto the field thinking about giving up.
Chasing a Massive Target
The Titans found themselves in a precarious position at 88 for 8 in just 11.2 overs, needing 167 runs off 64 balls to win. Although Tewatia's efforts helped the team reach 162, it was not enough against the strong RCB bowling attack.
Phillips discussed the immense pressure of chasing such a high target, noting that it is a rare feat in the IPL. He remarked, "There’s a huge amount of scoreboard pressure when you’re trying to chase 250. Very few teams have done it. Punjab Kings have managed to do it a couple of times, which has been phenomenal."
He added, "I’ve yet to be part of a team that’s gotten anywhere near 250, so sometimes it just is what it is."
Looking Ahead
Historically, the Punjab Kings are the only team to have successfully chased down targets exceeding 250 runs, achieving this remarkable feat twice. They scored 262 against the Kolkata Knight Riders in 2024 and 265 against the Delhi Capitals earlier in the current season.
Despite the setback, the Gujarat Titans still have a chance to qualify for the finals as they prepare for Qualifier 2 against the winner of the Eliminator match between the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Rajasthan Royals on May 29.
