Overview of Commonwealth Games 2026

The 2026 Commonwealth Games will be held in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23 to August 2. This 23rd edition of the multi-sport event will feature over 3,000 athletes from 74 nations competing in a streamlined program of 10 core sports.

Change of Venue from Victoria to Glasgow

Originally scheduled to take place in Victoria, Australia, the Games were relocated to Glasgow after the Australian state withdrew in July 2023. The withdrawal was due to a significant increase in projected costs, which escalated from an initial estimate of AUD 2.6 billion to over AUD 6 billion. Glasgow agreed to host a scaled-back version of the Games, utilizing existing venues to manage expenses.

India's Participation

India will send a contingent of 125 athletes competing in 13 sports disciplines, including para-sports. The team comprises 77 male and 48 female athletes, with notable participants like Neeraj Chopra, Mirabai Chanu, and Lovlina Borgohain leading the charge as India aims for a strong medal tally.

Exclusion of Five Major Sports

Due to the financial constraints and the need for a budget-conscious approach, the organizers had to significantly reduce the number of sports from an initial 19. Sports such as cricket, hockey, wrestling, badminton, and table tennis were excluded because they require specialized venues and infrastructure that could not be accommodated within Glasgow's four-venue model.

The decision to omit these sports was made to ensure the Games remained financially viable and logistically manageable, focusing on utilizing existing facilities.

India's Historical Performance at Commonwealth Games

India has a rich history at the Commonwealth Games, having participated since 1934, except for a few editions. The nation has amassed a total of 564 medals, including 203 gold, 190 silver, and 171 bronze. The 2010 Commonwealth Games, held in India, marked their best performance with 101 medals, including 38 gold.

In the previous edition in Birmingham 2022, India secured 61 medals, finishing fourth overall. Despite the absence of some medal-heavy sports in Glasgow, India will rely on athletics, weightlifting, and boxing to meet their medal expectations.
