Giuseppe Cristaldi, the technical director of Punjab FC, shared his thoughts on India's ambitions for the FIFA World Cup and the struggles faced by his home country, Italy, which has missed qualifying for the World Cup three times in a row. His comments came during the Reliance Foundation Development League (RFDL) exposure tour in Japan, where his team achieved victories against Avispa Fukuoka and Giravanz Kitakyushu but faced a penalty shootout loss to FC Baleine Shimonoseski in their final match.
India's World Cup Journey
Indian football has faced significant challenges, with the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and private organizations striving to elevate the sport. Despite these efforts, India has yet to qualify for a FIFA World Cup. The nation also missed out on the Asian Cup 2027, having participated in only five editions, with their best performance being a runners-up finish in 1964. Cristaldi emphasized the need for collective efforts among all stakeholders to foster player development and revive India's footballing stature.
"For India, we hope that this moment can arrive soon. When? This is hard to say because it depends on many factors obviously," Cristaldi remarked.
Italy's World Cup Qualification Woes
Cristaldi reflected on Italy's recent failure to qualify for the World Cup after a loss to Bosnia and Herzegovina, describing it as an 'open scar' for the nation. He expressed optimism that Italy, which last lifted the trophy in 2006, could return to the World Cup stage in 2030, coinciding with the tournament's centenary. He noted that the current technical director of Italy, Paolo Maldini, is leading efforts to revamp the team following Gennaro Gattuso's departure.
"Missing three times in a row the World Cup qualification is an open scar for all of us, all Italians. Usually, during the World Cup, that is the summer where all the people gather together, they celebrate together. We were able to celebrate this competition four times, so we have four stars on the jersey," he stated.
Spain's World Cup Triumph
On Spain's recent World Cup victory, where they defeated Argentina 1-0 thanks to a goal from Ferran Torres, Cristaldi praised their performance, stating they were deserving champions. He highlighted Spain's impressive defensive record, conceding only one goal throughout the tournament, and noted their challenging path to the final, which included victories over France, Belgium, and Portugal.
"Spain has surely deserved to win this World Cup. They displayed dominant performances from the beginning till the end. It was an absolutely one-way game against Argentina, the world champion and the double Copa America champion," he concluded.
