Gita Gopinath's Transition from IMF to Academia

Washington: Gita Gopinath, currently serving as the First Deputy Managing Director (FDMD) of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), has announced her decision to leave her position in August 2025 to return to her academic career at Harvard University, as confirmed by the IMF.

Recognized as a pioneer in the field of international economics, Gopinath will assume the role of the first Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics at Harvard.

Kristalina Georgieva, the Managing Director of the IMF, acknowledged Gopinath's upcoming departure and mentioned that a successor will be appointed in due time.

Gopinath began her journey with the IMF in 2019 as Chief Economist, marking a historic moment as the first woman to hold this prestigious role. Her guidance during significant global economic challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic, has been widely acknowledged.

In January 2022, she advanced to the position of First Deputy Managing Director, the second-highest role within the organization.

Reflecting on her nearly seven years at the IMF in a post on X, Gopinath expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to one of the leading financial institutions globally.

She stated, "After nearly 7 amazing years at the IMF, I have decided to return to my academic roots. On September 1, 2025, I will rejoin @HarvardEcon as the inaugural Gregory and Ania Coffey Professor of Economics. I am truly grateful for my time at @IMFnews, first as Chief Economist and then as First Deputy Managing Director."

Gopinath also expressed appreciation for her collaboration with the IMF's dedicated staff, management colleagues, the Executive Board, and country authorities. She extended special thanks to Kristalina Georgieva and her predecessor, Christine Lagarde, for the unique opportunity to serve during such challenging times.

Prior to her tenure at the IMF, Gopinath was the John Zwaanstra Professor of International Studies and Economics at Harvard University.

During her leadership, the IMF significantly influenced the global economic response to various crises, including the COVID-19 pandemic, supply chain disruptions, debt issues in developing nations, and challenges related to climate finance.

The announcement of her successor at the IMF is still pending.
