Giriraj Singh's Remarks on West Bengal's Political Landscape

On Monday, Union Minister Giriraj Singh expressed his agreement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's comments regarding the political history of West Bengal. He accused the Congress party of engaging in "appeasement politics" following the partition, which he claims left the state in disarray. Referring to the violence during the partition, Singh highlighted the significant role played by Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in safeguarding Bengal during that tumultuous period. He further alleged that the policies of Congress perpetuated the wounds from 1946, a reference to the violence that occurred on Direct Action Day. Singh stated that while Mukherjee worked to protect Bengal during the partition, the Congress government allowed the massacre of Hindus and continued attacks under the guise of 'Direct Action Day.' He criticized Congress for its appeasement tactics, which he believes led to the near devastation of the state by the TMC. With the arrival of the BJP, he noted that the people of Bengal now feel as if they are experiencing a second independence and are celebrating this change.

Response to Allegations Against TMC

When asked about alleged funding controversies within the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Singh remarked that Mamata Banerjee, who presents herself as a simple woman wearing slippers and a sari, is actually leading a regime characterized by corruption involving her ministers and others. This reality is now becoming evident to the public. During a rally in Tarakeswar, Hooghly district on June 20, PM Modi emphasized the need to educate the younger generation about the significance of 'West Bengal Day' and the historical events surrounding the state's formation. He recalled attempts to incorporate undivided Bengal into Pakistan during the partition and praised leaders like Shyama Prasad Mukherjee for their strong opposition to such efforts.

Importance of West Bengal Day

PM Modi stressed the importance of repeatedly informing today's youth about West Bengal Day. He highlighted the historical context of the time when there were attempts to make the entire Bengal part of Pakistan, while Congress capitulated to those scheming against it. In April 1947, Mukherjee passed a historic resolution declaring that all of Bengal would not become part of Pakistan, initiating the 'Bengali-Hindu Homeland Movement.' Modi pointed out that in recent years, there have been attempts to downplay the significance of West Bengal Day and to obscure or alter the state's history due to political agendas. He noted that the contributions of leaders like Mukherjee have not been adequately recognized, despite their pivotal roles in shaping post-independence political developments.

Celebrating West Bengal Day

West Bengal Day is celebrated annually on June 20, marking the official establishment of the state. This day honors the unique cultural heritage, historical legacy, and the legislative process that led to its formation.
