A Remarkable Find in the Solomon Islands

The world is vast and teeming with diverse life forms. Take frogs, for instance; they are typically small in size. However, we are about to introduce you to a giant frog whose dimensions are comparable to those of a human child. This extraordinary amphibian was discovered by locals in the Solomon Islands.

Jimmy Hugo, a resident of Honiara, captured a striking image of this enormous frog. In the photo, a young boy stands holding the giant frog in his arms, making it appear as if he is cradling a human baby.

This frog belongs to a unique species that is currently facing a decline in population. Hugo, who owns a timber milling operation, shared that some workers stumbled upon this giant frog while hunting wild pigs. Known as the 'Cornufer gupi,' this frog is also referred to as 'bush chicken' by the locals.

During an interview, Hugo expressed his surprise at the overwhelming response to his photo. He stated that he never anticipated so many people would view and react to it. He further explained that the Cornufer gupi, known as 'bush chicken' in the Solomon Islands and Papua New Guinea, is hunted by locals for its valuable meat.

Hugo added that the taste of bush chicken is even more delicious than chicken. Not only the general public but also scientists are astonished by this large frog. Curator Jodie Rowley from the Australian Museum, specializing in amphibian and reptile conservation biology, remarked that he has never seen such a large frog in his entire life. This frog is likely very old.

While this frog is indeed fascinating, its population is declining due to habitat loss and pollution.
