Georgia Man Pleads Not Guilty in Fatal Shooting Case, Claims Self-Defense
Overview of the Case
A man in Georgia, accused of killing his wife and three of her family members, has pleaded not guilty. His attorney argues that the shootings were a result of self-defense after enduring months of threats and intimidation against him.
Details of the Plea and Defense Argument
During a recent court session in Gwinnett County, the judge inquired about Vijay Kumar's plea. His attorney, Ashleigh Merchant, responded with a clear not guilty. She emphasized that her client is innocent and intends to present the case as one of self-defense. "He is truly innocent. This tragic situation will be framed as a case of self-defense throughout the trial," Merchant stated, according to reports.
Victims of the Incident
Kumar is charged with the deaths of his wife, Meenu Dogra, and her relatives Nidhi Chander, Harish Chander, and Gourav Kumar. The incident occurred on January 23 during a confrontation that involved children, one of whom called emergency services. Kumar has been in custody since his arrest.
Defense's Claims of Threats
Merchant has filed a motion for a bond hearing, detailing a history of threats, financial extortion, and violence directed at Kumar by certain members of his wife's family. She clarified that her accusations were aimed at specific individuals, not the entire family. The motion alleges that on the night of the shooting, Gourav Kumar forcibly removed Vijay from his home, leaving him without his phone or coat, and pushed him into the Chander residence, where he felt his life was in danger due to ongoing intimidation.
Kumar's Background and Support
Merchant also pointed out Kumar's clean criminal record and his employment in a highly regulated industry. She noted the significant support he has received, with over 150 individuals attending court on his behalf and more than 100 letters of support submitted. "He has a strong community backing, with many people here and numerous letters supporting him," Merchant remarked.
