Chief Minister Pema Khandu, who was present in the MoU signing ceremony along with Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, described it as a milestone in the State’s development journey.
Itanagar, June 7: In a noteworthy advancement, 110 families from Geku in the Upper Siang district have officially endorsed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) supporting the pre-feasibility report (PFR) for the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project.
During the MoU signing event, Chief Minister Pema Khandu, accompanied by Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein and other officials, hailed this moment as a significant achievement in the state's developmental trajectory.
Khandu congratulated the Geku residents for their bold decision to back a project of national significance. He emphasized that the Siang Upper Multipurpose Project is crucial not only for energy production but also for protecting the Siang river basin and the communities residing along its banks from potential risks associated with uncontrolled water discharge from upstream sources.
The Chief Minister also recognized the efforts of Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, Hydropower Minister Ninong Ering, Mariyang-Geku MLA Oni Panyang, and various community leaders and stakeholders who played a vital role in this initiative.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, who also oversees the Hydropower portfolio, remarked that the backing from Geku's residents signifies a pivotal move towards sustainable development in the state. He highlighted that the decision of these 110 households to sign the MoU showcases their confidence in the project.
Mein assured that development initiatives would be carried out in a manner that is inclusive and sustainable, while also honoring the rights, interests, cultural heritage, and traditional practices of local communities.
