Gambhir's Confidence in Abhishek Sharma

Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has expressed his unwavering support for Abhishek Sharma, the top-ranked T20I batsman, who faced a challenging start in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. Despite recording three consecutive ducks, Sharma played a pivotal role in India's triumph over New Zealand by 96 runs in Ahmedabad.

Entering the tournament with high hopes, Sharma struggled initially, failing to score in matches against the USA, Pakistan, and the Netherlands. However, he bounced back with a half-century against Zimbabwe in the Super 8 stage. In the final, he showcased his talent by scoring 52 runs off just 21 balls, achieving the fastest fifty of the 2026 edition in a mere 18 deliveries, contributing to India's impressive total of 255.

Gambhir's Encouragement: 'Out of Runs, Not Out of Form'

During an interview on JioHotstar, Gambhir reflected on his own struggles during the 2014 IPL season, emphasizing that such phases are common in a cricketer's career. He reassured Sharma that he is not out of form but merely 'out of runs', encouraging him to adopt a more aggressive mindset and disregard external criticism.

"I've faced worse situations than him in 2014 when I had three ducks in a row, followed by another in the fourth match. I told him that while people focus on scores, true form can only be assessed after facing 20 to 30 balls. He hasn't even reached that yet. I urged him to be more aggressive in his next outing," Gambhir stated.

A Call to Play Fearlessly

Gambhir also motivated Sharma to play without fear and remain true to his natural attacking style. He stated, "If you want to hit the first ball for six, go for it and commit fully because what matters is the opinion of your teammates, not the outside world."

Trust in the Team

Gambhir conveyed his confidence in the team, asserting that the dressing room has always believed in every player chosen for the ICC Men's T20 World Cup. He remarked, "There was never any doubt about Abhishek. We have always had faith in everyone selected to represent the country in the T20 World Cup."

India's Historic Victory

India made history by clinching their third T20 World Cup title, becoming the first team to defend the title while hosting the tournament, following a remarkable 96-run victory over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
