Gautam Gambhir and MS Dhoni Celebrate India's T20 World Cup Victory
Social Media Exchange Between Dhoni and Gambhir
Following India's impressive victory over New Zealand in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026, head coach Gautam Gambhir engaged with his former captain MS Dhoni on social media. Dhoni took to Instagram to congratulate the team and humorously compliment Gambhir, stating, "Your smile looks fantastic, and the intensity combined with it is a winning formula." He expressed pride in India's achievement, noting, "History is made in Ahmedabad. Congratulations to the team, support staff, and fans worldwide. It’s a joy to watch you all play. Coach Sahab, your smile is a killer combo, well done! (Let’s not write anything about BUMRAH; he’s a champion bowler)."
India's Landmark T20 World Cup Victory
India triumphed over New Zealand by 96 runs, successfully defending their T20 World Cup title. This victory marked a historic moment as India became the first team to win the T20 World Cup on home soil, the first to secure consecutive titles after their 2024 win, and the first to lift the trophy three times (2007, 2024, and 2026).
Dominance in Batting
In the final match, New Zealand opted to field first after winning the toss. However, Abhishek Sharma made a remarkable comeback, scoring 52 runs off just 21 balls, including six fours and three sixes, forming a crucial 98-run partnership with Samson. Ishan Kishan also contributed significantly with 54 runs off 25 balls, leading India to surpass the 200-run mark in the 16th over. Shivam Dube added valuable runs, finishing with 26 not out off eight balls, helping India reach a total of 255/5, the highest score in T20 World Cup finals. James Neesham was the standout bowler for New Zealand, taking 3 wickets for 46 runs.
New Zealand's Struggle in the Chase
In their chase for 256 runs, New Zealand faced early setbacks, reduced to 72/5 by the efforts of Axar and Bumrah. Tim Seifert managed to score a half-century (52 runs off 26 balls), but despite a brief partnership between Daryl Mitchell (17) and captain Mitchell Santner (43 runs off 35 balls), New Zealand was ultimately bowled out for just 159 runs.
