Gambhir's Stance on India-Pakistan Cricket Relations

Gautam Gambhir, the head coach of the Indian cricket team, has expressed his strong belief that all cricketing interactions between India and Pakistan should cease, particularly in light of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam.

On April 22, a tragic incident occurred in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, where terrorists targeted tourists, resulting in the deaths of 25 Indian nationals and one Nepalese citizen, along with numerous injuries.

In response to this attack, India has implemented significant countermeasures against Pakistan, which include suspending the Indus Water Treaty to convey a firm message regarding Pakistan's involvement in cross-border terrorism.

No Cricketing Engagements Until Terrorism Ceases

Gambhir firmly believes that until cross-border terrorism is eradicated, India should refrain from any cricketing engagements with Pakistan, including events like the Asia Cup and ICC tournaments.

"My personal stance is a definitive no. Ultimately, it is a governmental decision. The safety of our soldiers is paramount. Until cross-border terrorism is addressed, there should be no interactions between India and Pakistan," Gambhir stated during the ABP News Summit.

Historical Context of India-Pakistan Cricket Relations

Due to ongoing political tensions, India has not visited Pakistan since 2008, when they participated in the Asia Cup. The last bilateral series took place in 2012-13 in India, featuring white-ball matches. Since then, encounters have mainly occurred during ICC tournaments and the Asia Cup.

India's Withdrawal from Champions Trophy 2025

In February, Pakistan was set to host the Champions Trophy, but India opted not to participate due to the prevailing geopolitical climate. Consequently, the International Cricket Council (ICC) resolved the hosting rights for the 2025 Champions Trophy, deciding it would take place in Pakistan and another neutral venue.

Furthermore, it was announced that a hybrid model would be utilized for all ICC events during the 2024-27 cycle, which will be hosted in either India or Pakistan.

Gambhir Addresses Rumors About His Relationship with Rohit Sharma

Gambhir also took the opportunity to clarify his relationship with Indian captain Rohit Sharma amidst rumors of a rift following India's tour of Australia. Various reports suggested internal discord within the squad.

He dismissed these claims, attributing them to individuals seeking attention for ratings, stating, "This is merely social media chatter, and those who claim to be experts are doing it for TRP. We won the Champions Trophy two months ago. A coach and captain achieved that together. I hold great respect for Rohit Sharma."

Gambhir emphasized, "I respect him as a person and for his contributions to Indian cricket. I will continue to do so moving forward. Those questioning our relationship should conduct their research."
