Delhi: Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, has finally addressed the recent decision to strip Rishabh Pant of his vice-captaincy in the Test squad, replacing him with KL Rahul. This announcement, made during the unveiling of the team for the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan, has puzzled many fans.

While Gambhir refrained from delving into the specifics of the decision, he emphasized the importance of senior players understanding and respecting the context of the game.

Impact of IPL Performance on Vice-Captaincy

This change follows India's disappointing 0-2 series loss to South Africa, where Pant faced significant criticism for his performance. The management was particularly displeased with a reckless shot he played that led to his dismissal in the second Test held in Guwahati.

In a press conference in Delhi prior to the Afghanistan match, Gambhir outlined the team's expectations. He stated, "We don't want Rishabh Pant to alter his natural playing style. However, in international cricket, players must acknowledge and respect the match situation."

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate shared that Pant has accepted the decision positively. He noted that Pant has no grievances and has engaged in open discussions with Gambhir regarding the matter. The management's goal is for Pant to better adapt to varying match situations.
