Gambhir Speaks on Pant's Vice-Captaincy Removal

Delhi: Gautam Gambhir, the head coach, has finally addressed the recent decision to strip Rishabh Pant of his vice-captaincy in the Test squad, replacing him with KL Rahul. This announcement, made during the unveiling of the team for the upcoming one-off Test against Afghanistan, has puzzled many fans.

While Gambhir refrained from delving into the specifics of the decision, he emphasized the importance of senior players understanding and respecting the context of the game.

Impact of IPL Performance on Vice-Captaincy

This change follows India's disappointing 0-2 series loss to South Africa, where Pant faced significant criticism for his performance. The management was particularly displeased with a reckless shot he played that led to his dismissal in the second Test held in Guwahati.

Compounding the situation, Pant's lackluster performance in the IPL 2026 season with the Lucknow Super Giants fueled speculation regarding his future in the team.

Gambhir's Expectations for Players

In a press conference in Delhi prior to the Afghanistan match, Gambhir outlined the team's expectations. He stated, "We don't want Rishabh Pant to alter his natural playing style. However, in international cricket, players must acknowledge and respect the match situation."

Pant's Response to the Decision

Assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate shared that Pant has accepted the decision positively. He noted that Pant has no grievances and has engaged in open discussions with Gambhir regarding the matter. The management's goal is for Pant to better adapt to varying match situations.

"In a team like this, an official title isn't necessary to demonstrate leadership. Rishabh understands this. His attitude as a senior player has been commendable," remarked the former Netherlands all-rounder.
