Gautam Adani Highlights Spinal Health Crisis at Conference

Addressing a National Health Crisis
Mumbai, July 11: Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, emphasized that lower back pain has escalated into a national crisis, significantly impacting productivity across India. He made this statement during the 5th Annual Conference of the Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery-Asia Pacific (SMISS-AP) held in Mumbai.
Adani expressed his astonishment at the alarming rise of lower back pain as a primary cause of disability in the nation, surpassing even diabetes and heart disease. He pointed out that nearly half of all adult Indians suffer from this condition annually, labeling it a spinal epidemic that is more prevalent than global averages.
“This issue transcends health; it represents a national crisis reflected in lost productivity, escalating healthcare expenses, and shattered aspirations,” he remarked.
The industrialist urged for innovative entrepreneurial solutions to create AI-driven, cost-effective treatments aimed at spinal health, which he believes are essential for realizing the nation's ambitions.
“I encourage you to consider developing India’s first AI-powered spinal diagnostic platform that can identify degeneration before it leads to disability,” he stated.
He further noted that the spine saved today could belong to future innovators, from engineers to scientists, who will contribute to the nation’s progress.
Adani also called for a reimagining of rural surgical practices, advocating for mobile operating theatres that can provide essential services to underserved villages.
Additionally, he proposed the establishment of a pioneering spinal hospital that could serve as a global hub for robotic surgery and advanced medical technologies.
He reaffirmed the Adani Group's commitment to advancing healthcare in India, recalling a pledge made three years ago to invest Rs 60,000 crore in healthcare, education, and skill development.
Adani outlined a vision for a healthcare system that evolves with scientific advancements while maintaining a human-centered approach. This model aims to integrate clinical care, academic training, and research seamlessly.
“We are focusing on building scalable healthcare infrastructure capable of rapid expansion during crises, alongside creating world-class healthcare institutions that merge innovation with patient care,” he added.
He highlighted the necessity of training doctors in robotics, AI, and healthcare management, while also instilling values of empathy and ethics in their education.
Moreover, Adani announced plans to invest in premier training institutes and establish strict quality protocols to ensure excellence in healthcare delivery.
“Our goal is to construct a future-ready healthcare system that is integrated, intelligent, inclusive, and inspired. We will achieve this through the Adani Healthcare Temples, which will be 1,000-bed integrated campuses starting in Ahmedabad and Mumbai,” he concluded.
“These facilities will be designed as world-class, affordable, AI-first healthcare ecosystems, with guidance from the Mayo Clinic on design and global medical standards,” he emphasized.
