Gaurav Gogoi's Nomination Marks a New Chapter in Assam Politics
On Monday, Gaurav Gogoi, the president of the Assam Congress, submitted his nomination from the Jorhat assembly constituency, marking his entry into state-level electoral politics. Following this, Gogoi expressed concerns about the current climate of hate-driven politics in Assam, stating that the people are weary of it. He emphasized the need for all opposition parties in Assam to unite to cleanse the political landscape.
Currently serving as the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Gogoi began his day by visiting various religious sites across communities. He then launched a roadshow from the Jorhat Stadium, which attracted a large crowd and concluded at the district commissioner's office, where he officially submitted his nomination papers.
Opposition Coalition and Political Accountability
The Congress party is part of a six-party opposition alliance that includes the Raijor Dal, Assam Ethnic Nationalist Party, Communist Party of India (Marxist), Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist), and the All Party Hill Leaders Conference, whose supporters also participated in the rally. Speaking to reporters, Gogoi described the upcoming elections as an opportunity to purify the state's political environment, criticizing the decline in standards over recent years. He called on citizens to collectively take responsibility for restoring the quality of public life.
Gogoi also pledged that if Congress comes to power, it will ensure that women can benefit from welfare schemes without needing to participate in political programs. He accused the BJP of misusing government initiatives for political mobilization, stating that such practices undermine dignity and fairness. Earlier in the day, Gogoi prayed at various religious sites, including a Gurudwara, temple, naamghar, mosque, and church, and paid tribute to his father, former Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi, by visiting his residence.
