Gaurav Gogoi Challenges BJP's One-Sided Election Claims in Assam
Political Landscape in Assam Shifts
Guwahati, March 24: The chief of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC), Gaurav Gogoi, has dismissed assertions that the forthcoming Assembly elections will be uncompetitive, emphasizing that a significant shift is occurring against the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
While addressing party members and supporters in Jorhat, Gogoi remarked that the BJP's previous belief in a one-sided election is no longer valid.
“The BJP may have thought this election would be straightforward, but they are now aware of a strong movement against them in Assam. Many citizens were reluctant to voice their opinions due to fears of losing access to government benefits,” he stated.
He noted that the introduction of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) has transformed the political dynamics.
“With the MCC in effect, the government is no longer acting as it did before, and the Chief Minister cannot use the Assam Police as a tool for his personal agenda,” he claimed.
Gogoi expressed his faith in the voters, asserting that the election results will reflect the people's will. “This time, the elections will be determined by the citizens, and they will prevail,” he added.
Throughout the day, Gogoi engaged in organizational meetings and connected with local workers, residents, and social groups in the area.
In a bid to foster a more civil political discourse amid ongoing exchanges with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, Gogoi highlighted the significance of his home constituency, Jorhat.
“Jorhat represents pride and identity. It should convey a positive message to other regions about how elections can be approached through respectful politics,” he remarked.
Gogoi's comments were a direct response to Sarma's earlier statement during the launch of the second phase of the Jana Aashirwad Yatra, where the Chief Minister claimed the election would be unchallenged.
“This election is one-sided. The Opposition is nearly absent, and the BJP is poised for a historic victory,” Sarma had stated.
He also mentioned that the party's manifesto for the upcoming Assam Assembly elections would be unveiled within the next two days.
