Grandmasters End Gambits' Streak, Pipers Continue Winning Ways

In Bengaluru on Sunday, the Ganges Grandmasters put an end to the FYER American Gambits' winning streak, while the defending champions, Alpine APL Pipers, secured their second consecutive victory in the Global Chess League (GCL), a collaborative effort by Tech Mahindra and FIDE. After suffering a defeat to the Pipers earlier in the day, the Grandmasters bounced back to defeat the Gambits 9-7, climbing to the second position in the league standings, as reported by GCL.

The Pipers had previously triumphed over the Ganges Grandmasters with a score of 11-6, while the PBG Alaskan Knights achieved their first tournament win by defeating the CheQ Mumba Masters 11-6.

Ganges Grandmasters Overcome Gambits

The second day of GCL Season 4 was filled with thrilling matches, showcasing impressive victories and remarkable comebacks. Among the spectators was Indian esports star and S8UL co-founder Naman 'Mortal' Mathur, who likely enjoyed watching his favorite player, Nihal Sarin, secure the only win for the FYERS American Gambits against the Ganges Grandmasters. However, Nihal's success was insufficient for the Gambits, as Player of the Match Polina Shuvalova defeated Bibisara Assaubayeva, marking her third consecutive win. Ian Nepomniachtchi also turned the tide against 2026 Candidates winner Javokhir Sindarov in a rook-pawn endgame, giving his team the lead. Despite having an advantage, Gambit's Daniil Dubov was unable to convert it into a victory against Leinier Dominguez Perez, with the match extending to 101 moves.

Pipers Defeat Grandmasters Despite Carlsen's Escape

Earlier in the day, Vidit Gujrathi and Koneru Humpy achieved their second consecutive wins with black pieces, placing the Pipers in a strong position, even as women's World Cup champion Divya Deshmukh faced another defeat. Vidit capitalized on a minor mistake from Leinier Dominguez Perez to secure victory in 38 moves, while Humpy showcased her skills by systematically defeating Stavroula Tsolakidou in 41 moves. However, with Divya losing to Shuvalova, the Ganges Grandmasters had an opportunity to lessen their defeat margin. Ian Nepomniachtchi held a clear advantage against Magnus Carlsen, the world No. 1, with over five minutes remaining in the endgame. Yet, Carlsen demonstrated his endgame prowess, managing to salvage a draw after trading queens.

After her match, Player of the Match Humpy remarked, 'After the opening, I was very clear that I was in a better position. I could have played much better, but I also wanted to play fast, and I think I played well enough to win.'

Alaskan Knights Secure First Win

Later, the PBG Alaskan Knights climbed to fourth place in the standings as Arjun Erigaisi, Player of the Match Nino Batsiashvili, and Abhimanyu Mishra won their matches with white pieces, leading to a comfortable victory over the CheQ Mumba Masters. Young talent Yagiz Kaan Erdogmus had a promising position against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov but faltered under time pressure, ultimately resigning after 82 moves.
