Ganga Water Supply Resumes at Har Ki Pauri Ahead of Diwali
Relief for Pilgrims at Har Ki Pauri
In Haridwar, just before Diwali, devotees received encouraging news as the water supply from the Ganga canal has been restored. However, the water levels at the ghats remain insufficient, with only about 3 to 4 feet of water currently available. Consequently, pilgrims arriving in Haridwar for Diwali and Govardhan Puja will have to manage with limited water for their holy dips.
Every year, maintenance and cleaning of the Ganga canal occur between Dussehra and Diwali, which led to the water supply being halted since October 21, 2026. This resulted in many ghats at Har Ki Pauri drying up.
Ghats Begin to Regain Their Charm
Due to the closure of the Ganga canal, water levels at Har Ki Pauri had nearly depleted, prompting locals to search for coins and other valuables. The low water levels even revealed railway tracks from the British era.
With the Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department resuming water flow, the ghats are beginning to see the return of the Ganga's waters, providing some relief for pilgrims visiting during Diwali.
Reasons for Limited Water Flow
Significant construction work is underway in Haridwar in preparation for the upcoming Ardh Kumbh, including the building of new ghats and bridges. As a result, only a limited amount of water is currently being released into the Ganga.
According to regulations, it is essential to maintain a minimum flow of 200 cusecs of water at the Brahmakund in Har Ki Pauri.
Potential Increase in Water Levels for Diwali
Authorities have indicated that they may increase the water levels during the Ganga Maha Aarti on Diwali evening to ensure that pilgrims do not face difficulties.
If you plan to take a holy dip in the Ganga during Diwali or Govardhan Puja, keep in mind the limited water availability at the ghats. While the Ganga's waters have returned, conditions for deep immersion are not yet suitable.
