In a thrilling match at the Asian Games, India's Ganesh Mani Ratnam triumphed over fellow countryman Sahil Jadhav with a close score of 149-148 in the men's compound individual round of 16 on Monday. The competition was intense, showcasing both archers' precision, but Ganesh managed to pull ahead in the final moments, as reported by ESPN.
Previously, Ganesh had secured a victory against Indonesia's Sostar Andaru Rinaldi, winning 144-142 in the round of 32. With this latest win, he has advanced to the quarterfinals, where he will compete against Chen Chieh-lun from Chinese Taipei on October 1. Jadhav, who had a strong start by defeating Mongolia's Jamiyangombo Purevdorj 149-137 in the earlier round, saw his journey end at the hands of his teammate. This outcome leaves Ganesh as the sole Indian competitor remaining in the men's individual compound event.
India's Success in Team Events
The Indian archery team has been performing exceptionally well in the team events at the Games. On Sunday, all five Indian teams that participated advanced to the semifinals. This includes the men's and women's recurve teams, as well as the mixed recurve team, alongside the men's and women's compound teams, all securing spots in the last four. The quarterfinals for the individual compound competition are set to continue on October 1.
Other Competitions on Day 9
On Day 9 of the Games, Indian athlete Sivaraj Babu exited the men's shortboard surfing event after a loss to the Philippines' Alciso Jayuard, with a score of 7.83-11.50 in Round 3.
Additionally, the Indian men's cricket team is competing against Afghanistan in the quarterfinals, aiming to defend their gold medal from the 2023 Hangzhou Games.
Several other Indian athletes are also in action today, including Avinash Sable in the men's 3000m steeplechase, Murali Sreeshankar in the men's long jump, Yash Vir Singh and Rohit Yadav in the men's javelin throw, and Gulveer Singh in the men's 1500m.
In boxing, Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain is set to face Seong Suyeon from the Republic of Korea in the women's 75kg quarterfinal. Meanwhile, Manu Bhaker, Esha Singh, and Rahi Sarnobat will compete in the women's 25m pistol qualification round in shooting.
