New Delhi: The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is being celebrated with great zeal and devotion throughout India on Monday, as devotees bring home intricately designed idols of Lord Ganesha to kick off the 10-day festivities.
Cities are adorned with elaborate decorations, vibrant pandals, and cultural events, creating a lively atmosphere where devotees engage in prayers, offer flowers, sweets, and other traditional items to honor Lord Ganesha.
This Hindu festival commemorates the birth of Lord Ganesha, who symbolizes wisdom, prosperity, and new beginnings, and is traditionally worshipped before embarking on significant ventures.
The festivities will reach their peak on Anant Chaturdashi, which falls on September 25, when devotees bid farewell to the deity through immersion ceremonies.
The modern public celebration of Ganesh Chaturthi in Maharashtra can be traced back to Keshavji Nayak Chawl in Girgaum, Mumbai, where freedom fighter Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak initiated the first 'sarvajanik' Ganeshotsav in 1893. This movement aimed to unite people and rally public support for India's independence.
Conversely, the Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati Trust claims that the public celebration in Pune was initiated by Bhausaheb Rangari in 1892, making the origins of this festival historically significant for both Mumbai and Pune.
In Pune, the welcoming ceremony for Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati, considered the first public Ganpati in India, commenced with the lively beats of dhol-tasha, attracting numerous devotees.
Special prayers were also conducted at the Shrimant Dagdusheth Halwai Ganpati Temple as part of the festivities.
In Mumbai, stunning lights and intricate decorations have transformed several prominent Ganesh pandals and temples, including Lalbaugcha Raja, Tejukaya Mandal, and GSB Seva Mandal, among others.
Thousands of devotees flocked to the iconic Lalbaugcha Raja during Ganesh Chaturthi, forming long lines as they eagerly awaited their turn for darshan.
The famous Siddhivinayak Temple in Mumbai has also been beautifully decorated, enhancing the festive and spiritual ambiance in the city.
In Nagpur, a significant number of devotees gathered at the renowned Ganesh Tekdi Temple, standing in long lines to pray and seek Lord Ganesha's blessings for happiness and prosperity.
The temple grounds have been filled with a deeply devotional atmosphere since morning, resonating with chants of 'Ganpati Bappa Morya' as devotees came to pay their respects.
One devotee shared, "This 10-day festival is in full swing, and we are ensuring that every visitor receives proper darshan. We have organized separate queues for men and women, and for the elderly, we have arranged e-rickshaws and electric vehicles for easier transport."
Another devotee reflected on the spiritual importance of the festival, expressing joy in the celebrations. "We came here for Ganesh Chaturthi and had darshan at the temple. The atmosphere is so joyful and pleasant. The essence of Ganesh Chaturthi is that Lord Ganesha alleviates our troubles and brings happiness. We should strive to spread joy to others in our lives as well," they added.
