Vadodara Bridge Collapse: The tragic collapse of the Gambhira bridge in Gujarat's Vadodara district has resulted in 17 fatalities, with rescue teams recovering two more bodies on Thursday afternoon. Currently, two individuals remain unaccounted for, and search operations are still underway in the Mahisagar river. In response to the disaster, Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has mandated a thorough investigation into the incident. A specialized team has been tasked with examining the bridge's maintenance history, including repairs and quality assessments.


Details of the Collapse

The unfortunate event transpired on Wednesday when a section of the bridge, which serves as a vital link between Anand and Vadodara via Padra, unexpectedly gave way, sending vehicles and passengers into the river below. Among the vehicles involved were two trucks, two vans, and an auto-rickshaw that fell into the Mahisagar River.



Suspensions Following Preliminary Findings

In light of the initial investigation, four officials have been suspended immediately. Those suspended include NM Naikwala (Executive Engineer), UC Patel (Deputy Executive Engineer), RT Patel (Deputy Executive Engineer), and JV Shah (Assistant Engineer).


Compensation Announced by Gujarat CM

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has declared a compensation package of Rs 4 lakh for the families of the deceased in the bridge collapse. Additionally, Rs 50,000 will be provided to those injured in the incident.


In a statement on X, CM Patel expressed his sorrow over the tragedy, stating, “The collapse of a span of the Gambhira Bridge, connecting Anand and Vadodara, has caused an accident that is deeply distressing to the heart. The state government stands with full compassion alongside every family affected by this tragedy. The state government will provide assistance of 4 lakh rupees to the next of kin of the deceased. Additionally, each person injured in the accident will receive assistance of Rs 50,000, and all treatment arrangements will also be provided by the state government.”


Prime Minister's Condolences and Support

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families and announced a compensation of Rs 2 lakh from the PM National Relief Fund for the families of the deceased.


The PMO shared on X, “The loss of lives due to the collapse of a bridge in Vadodara district, Gujarat, is deeply saddening. Condolences to those who have lost their loved ones. May the injured recover soon.” It further stated, “An ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from PMNRF would be given to the next of kin of each deceased. The injured would be given Rs 50,000.”
