Frustration Grows Over Delayed Tezpur Flyover Construction
Concerns Over Tezpur Flyover Delay
The commuters and local businessmen are deeply frustrated by the delayed construction of the flyover.
TEZPUR, June 19: Despite claims from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma about rapid development in the region, the ongoing delays in the construction of the Mission Chariali flyover in Tezpur are causing significant distress among commuters.
This flyover, which spans approximately 3.2 kilometers from Balipukhuri Tiniali to Porua-Don Bosco High School, was initiated on March 1, 2020, with an estimated budget of Rs 275.9 crore and a completion target set for 2026. However, the slow pace of construction raises doubts about meeting this deadline, as a substantial amount of work remains unfinished.
Local residents and business owners are expressing their frustration over the prolonged construction. The ongoing work, coupled with unpaved detours and inadequate safety measures such as proper barricades and warning signs, poses serious risks to pedestrians and drivers alike. Currently, the alternative routes from BP Tiniali to Porua Chariali are filled with deep potholes and traffic congestion, making daily travel perilous.
Residents have voiced their dissatisfaction with the construction company's lack of urgency, stating that navigating the service roads is a nightmare, especially during rainy days.
Moreover, the disorganized dumping of construction materials adds to the hazards. A daily commuter remarked, “It’s not just inconvenient; it’s dangerous. Even short trips take an eternity, and the risk of accidents looms large.” Locals are urging the construction company, district administration, and local MLA Prithviraj Rava to take immediate action to repair the affected roads, particularly around the Mission Chariali traffic point.
There are also accusations regarding the use of substandard materials for the girders and a lack of safety measures during construction. Residents claim that their concerns have been raised with the relevant authorities, but no action has been taken. They also hold the district administration accountable for the situation.
Recently, the Sonitpur District Commissioner held a review meeting with officials from the PWD and NHAI, instructing contractors to accelerate the flyover's construction and ensure the safety of adjacent service roads. However, no visible progress has been made as of yet.
