From Fear to Fame: Malkangiri's Crematorium Transforms into a Selfie Spot

A Remarkable Transformation in Malkangiri

Malkangiri: Once a place shunned by locals due to fear, the crematorium has now become a popular destination for selfies, with visitors arriving with smartphones in hand.

The former neglected cremation site in Malkangiri has been transformed into a vibrant space that resembles a public park rather than a somber location. Residents who previously avoided the area now stroll through, enjoying the beautifully landscaped gardens, colorful lights, and a majestic statue of Lord Shiva, often capturing moments with selfies.

Traditionally, cremation grounds are associated with fear, particularly after dark. The dread of spirits, strange noises, and an unsettling quiet kept many away. The Malkangiri crematorium was no exception, as it was once surrounded by dirt, with most people preferring to stay outside during funerals. However, that perception has changed dramatically.

The Malkangiri Municipality invested Rs 1.30 crore to revamp the facility, which is now proudly referred to as an 'Ideal Cremation Ground.'

With its well-kept flower gardens, decorative paths, and artistic features, the crematorium now provides a serene and visually appealing environment.

At the entrance, a towering 15-foot statue of Lord Shiva stands alongside a Shivling. A resting area has been added for visitors, and as night falls, the entire site is illuminated with vibrant lights, dispelling the former eerie ambiance.

"This was my dream project," expressed Manoj Kumar Barik, chairperson of the Malkangiri Municipality. "The old crematorium was in ruins. I aimed to create a dignified space that wouldn't instill fear, and we have achieved that."

Barik also mentioned that the renovations will continue, with plans to revitalize the nearby Balisagar pond, transforming the area into a full-fledged park in the near future.

Today, the crematorium attracts visitors not only for final farewells but also for leisurely walks, quiet reflection, and even selfies, making it one of the cleanest and most peaceful spots in Malkangiri.
