Frances Tiafoe Advances to Miami Open Quarter-Finals with Thrilling Win
Tiafoe's Remarkable Comeback
On March 25 in Miami, Frances Tiafoe secured his place in the quarter-finals of the ATP Masters 1000 for the fifth time, marking his first appearance since Cincinnati in 2024. He triumphed over Terence Atmane with a score of 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at the Miami Open.
Tiafoe, 28, showcased his resilience once again, having saved two match points in his previous match against defending champion Jakub Mensik. In a tense moment during the third set against Atmane, he found himself down 0-40 while serving at 4-4, but managed to break serve crucially at 4-5.
"I've trained to be comfortable in uncomfortable situations, and I often put myself in those scenarios," Tiafoe reflected on his late-game performance.
"When you're sprinting, you don't focus on the total number left; you concentrate on the next one. That's how I approached it. When down 0/40, I focused on that, then 15/40, and so on. It's about staying present," he elaborated.
This victory sets up a quarter-final clash against Jannik Sinner, where Tiafoe will look to improve his 1-4 record against the Italian.
In other matches, Alexander Zverev defeated Quentin Halys from France in two tiebreakers, winning 7-6(4), 7-6(1). The 2018 Miami finalist has reached the quarter-finals or better in six of his last seven ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, and this marks the second time in 2024 that he has advanced to the quarters at both Indian Wells and Miami.
With this win over world No. 111 Halys, Zverev has extended his winning streak against players ranked outside the Top 100 to 16 matches, a streak that began in 2024.
Zverev's next opponent will be Francisco Cerundolo, who reached his fourth Miami quarter-final in five attempts after defeating Ugo Humbert 6-4, 6-3.
