Arrests Made in Connection with Murder


Shillong, Jan 13: Authorities have apprehended another suspect linked to the murder of an NGO member in the West Garo Hills of Meghalaya, bringing the total number of arrests to four.


The latest suspect was taken into custody on Monday after a series of extensive raids, as confirmed by SP AT Sangma. Previously, three individuals were arrested from Goalgaon village within the Rajabala constituency.


SP Sangma noted that the investigation is ongoing, and additional arrests may occur.


The murder has caused unrest in various parts of the district, prompting the deployment of extra security forces and the organization of peace committee meetings.


Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma condemned the incident and promised that those responsible would face justice, urging the community to remain calm.


In response to the situation, the district administration enforced a night curfew to prevent further disturbances and uphold law and order.


The victim, Dilseng M Sangma, was a member of the A·chik Conscious Holistically Integrated Krima (ACHIK), a Garo civil society organization. He was attacked on January 9 while investigating suspected illegal stone quarrying activities in the Rajabala area, along with other activists.


He later died from his injuries, while another individual who was with him suffered serious wounds. Authorities suspect that the attack was orchestrated by individuals associated with illegal stone quarry operations.
