Four Arrested in Assam for Job Scam Linked to Tata Semiconductor Project

Job Scam in Morigaon District

Morigaon, June 7: In a significant crackdown, authorities in Assam's Morigaon district apprehended four individuals, including a college lecturer, on Saturday. They are accused of defrauding job seekers by falsely promising employment opportunities at the Tata group's forthcoming semiconductor facility in exchange for money, according to police reports.

The arrested include an Economics lecturer from a college in the neighboring Nagaon district along with three accomplices, as confirmed by a police spokesperson.

The suspects allegedly amassed substantial amounts of money from hopeful candidates, assuring them of jobs at the semiconductor unit, the police stated.

"The scheme involved the creation of fraudulent WhatsApp groups where they lured unemployed youths from Nagaon and Morigaon districts with enticing job offers," the police official explained.

The operation was reportedly led by Tarikul Ahmed, who falsely claimed to be an engineer at the semiconductor facility, offering bogus job placements to numerous young individuals, the officer added.

"They extracted large sums from victims under the pretense of securing jobs in the project. The scammers even fabricated appointment letters, interview notifications, and other documents to mislead their targets," the police official noted.

Investigations revealed that significant amounts of money were transferred into Ahmed's bank account.

Authorities have urged the public to exercise caution, verify job offers' legitimacy, and report any suspicious activities to the police.

The semiconductor facility is being established in Jagiroad, Morigaon district.
