Former Tamil Nadu Minister Arrested Following Defamation Case

Shortly after the Madras High Court dismissed her anticipatory bail plea, police apprehended Anita R. Radhakrishnan, a former minister and DMK leader, on Friday in connection with a defamation case. This case stems from alleged defamatory remarks made by Radhakrishnan against Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay during a DMK rally held on June 20 in Thoothukudi district. Following her arrest, DMK supporters staged protests in Thoothukudi, accusing the government of targeting the opposition.

Justice G.K. Ilanthirayan of the Madras High Court rejected Radhakrishnan's anticipatory bail application, thereby allowing police to proceed with her arrest. In its ruling, the court noted the dominance of film industry leaders in Tamil Nadu since 1967 and questioned the nature of the speech that Radhakrishnan allegedly delivered at the rally.

Circumstances Surrounding the Arrest

According to police reports, Radhakrishnan was inspecting ongoing development projects in the Athur Town Panchayat, part of the Tiruchendur assembly constituency. During this inspection, she evaluated the town panchayat office and a newly constructed office building. As she exited the premises, police intervened, removed her from her vehicle, and took her into custody. She was subsequently transported to the Superintendent of Police's office for questioning related to the case.

Protests Erupt After Arrest

Immediately following her arrest, DMK activists present at the scene initiated protests. Supporters chanted slogans against the police and blocked roads, causing temporary traffic disruptions in the Athur area. To manage the situation and restore order, additional police forces were deployed.
