A former economic development official from Nanjing, China, received a death sentence on Monday after being found guilty of accepting bribes totaling $325 million over a span of thirty years. Yang Youlin faced multiple charges, including embezzlement, offering bribes, misappropriation of public funds, abuse of power, and money laundering, marking one of the most significant corruption scandals in recent history due to the enormous sums involved.

This investigation was part of President Xi Jinping's ongoing anti-corruption initiative, which some critics argue is also aimed at eliminating political adversaries. According to the Changzhou Intermediate People's Court, Yang received bribes in exchange for facilitating various projects, business operations, land grants, and working capital.

The court revealed that from 1993 to 2023, Yang unlawfully accepted assets and properties exceeding 2.21 billion yuan (approximately $325 million). During the proceedings, Yang expressed remorse and acknowledged his guilt. Images released by the court show him, gray-haired and dressed in a dark jacket, flanked by two police officers.

Public hearings for this case took place over two days in March and April, attended by more than 30 individuals. The court announced that Yang's personal assets would be confiscated, and efforts would be made to recover the total amount of bribes he received. Yang is among several officials in China who have faced the death penalty for corruption in recent years. Notably, in 2021, Lai Xiaomin, a party secretary of a state-owned enterprise, was executed for similar offenses, and in 2024, Li Jianping, a local official in Inner Mongolia, was also executed for embezzlement and bribery.
