Formation of Citizens’ Justice Monitoring Committee Proposed for Zubeen Garg Case
Call for Justice in Zubeen Garg's Case
Nazira, March 18: Debabrata Saikia, the MLA from Nazira and Leader of the Opposition in the State Assembly, has urged the residents of Assam to establish a citizens’ justice monitoring committee aimed at ensuring justice for the renowned singer-composer Zubeen Garg, who passed away under suspicious circumstances in Singapore last September.
Saikia proposed that this committee should include retired judges, senior lawyers, law educators, human rights advocates, and civil society representatives.
He expressed concern that six months have elapsed since Zubeen Garg's untimely death, yet public apprehensions and uncertainties regarding the judicial proceedings surrounding the case persist.
“The bank account of Shyamkanu Mahanta, the main suspect in Zubeen's death, has been unfrozen following a court ruling, highlighting flaws in the chargesheet submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) established by the Assam government. There are worries within Assam's civil society about potential political interference, especially since Zubeen was vocally critical of the BJP government's policies,” Saikia remarked.
The Nazira MLA emphasized that the proposed citizens’ justice monitoring committee would oversee each court session with experienced observers and maintain detailed records.
This committee will thoroughly analyze the chargesheet, court rulings, and legal proceedings, providing the public with clear and accessible information.
Additionally, it will offer essential legal research and support to Zubeen's family and their legal representatives. If any discrepancies arise in the prosecution's arguments, the committee will engage in discussions with the legal counsel and Zubeen's relatives.
The committee will also create a digital archive containing all public documents, directives, and schedules pertinent to the case. Importantly, it will not interfere with the trial process but will respect the judicial system while ensuring transparency in disclosing the truth to the public.
Saikia has committed to contributing a portion of the funds necessary for the establishment and operation of the Citizens’ Justice Monitoring Committee.
“I urge retired judges, the legal community, media personnel, students, Zubeen's fans, and all citizens of Assam to support this initiative,” the Nazira MLA concluded.
