Florida Congresswoman Resigns Amid Ethics Scandal and Federal Charges
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick Steps Down
Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick, a Congresswoman from Florida, has announced her resignation in light of potential expulsion linked to a significant ethics scandal and ongoing federal investigations. The Democrat has been found guilty of breaching over 20 House ethics regulations and is under scrutiny for allegedly misappropriating millions in FEMA funds. Her resignation follows increased scrutiny regarding financial discrepancies related to her actions.
In a statement shared on X, Cherfilus-McCormick criticized the proceedings as unjust and politically charged. She stated, “This was not a fair process. The Ethics Committee denied my new attorney’s reasonable request for adequate time to prepare my defense.” She contended that moving forward with the case while facing a criminal indictment hindered her ability to defend herself effectively.
Describing the investigation as a “witch hunt,” she expressed, “I cannot remain silent while my due process rights are violated and my reputation is damaged.” Despite her resignation, she characterized it as a tactical choice rather than an acknowledgment of guilt. “Instead of engaging in these political maneuvers, I opt to step back and focus on advocating for my constituents in Florida’s 20th district,” she confirmed, stating her resignation from the 119th Congress is effective immediately.
Cherfilus-McCormick also cautioned about the broader consequences of her case, asserting, “We must be cautious about the precedent we are establishing… we should not penalize individuals before due process is concluded.” She concluded her statement by expressing gratitude to her constituents, calling her service “the honor of my life,” and vowed that “this battle is far from over.”
Her resignation marks her as the third Congressional member to step down recently amid scandals. Eric Swalwell (D-California) and Tony Gonzales (R-Texas) have also resigned due to allegations of sexual misconduct. Additionally, Cory Mills (R-Florida) is facing calls for resignation and potential expulsion following accusations of sexual harassment, assault, financial misconduct, and stolen valor.
