New Delhi, June 2: On Tuesday, Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant officiated the oath-taking ceremony for five newly appointed judges of the Supreme Court. The judges, including Justices Sheel Nagu, Shree Chandrashekhar, Sanjeev Sachdeva, Arun Palli, and senior advocate V. Mohana, were sworn in following the Centre's approval of their appointments based on the Supreme Court Collegium's recommendations.
The Centre acted on the Collegium's suggestions from meetings held on May 22 and May 27, approving the elevation of four High Court Chief Justices and senior advocate Mohana to the Supreme Court.
Union Minister for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, shared the news on the social media platform X, stating that the President, after consulting with the CJI, appointed the new judges.
In a statement released on the apex court's website, the Collegium confirmed the elevation of the following individuals as judges of the Supreme Court.
Justice Nagu began his judicial career as a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in May 2011 and became the Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in July 2024.
Justice Chandrashekhar was appointed as a judge of the Jharkhand High Court in January 2013 and took on the role of Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court in January 2025.
Justice Sachdeva served as an Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court starting in April 2013 and became a permanent judge in March 2015. He later became the Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court in July 2025.
Justice Palli was appointed as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in December 2013 and became the Chief Justice of the Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh High Court in April 2025.
Senior advocate Mohana has extensive experience practicing before the Supreme Court, dealing with various constitutional, civil, and service law cases.
This oath ceremony follows the recent promulgation of the Supreme Court (Number of Judges) Amendment Ordinance, 2026, by President Droupadi Murmu, which increased the sanctioned number of judges in the Supreme Court from 33 to 37, not including the Chief Justice of India.
