Arrests Made in Manipur Following Violent Incidents

In the Bishnupur district of Manipur, authorities have detained five individuals from the Meitei organization, Arambai Tengol, in connection with an alleged attack on two police officers and the kidnapping of a man in Imphal West. A senior official provided this update on Monday.

The arrests occurred on Sunday when three members of the organization were taken into custody related to the abduction of Cheshm Abdul Kadar in the Paobitek Mayai Leikai area of Imphal West district.

According to the official, the suspects were presented before a local court, which ordered them to be held in police custody for seven days. Efforts are underway to apprehend additional individuals involved in the kidnapping.

Another member of the Meitei organization was arrested on June 12 for allegedly attacking a senior police officer and a constable. Both officers sustained injuries on June 9 while attempting to disperse protesters supporting a shutdown called by Arambai Tengol in Nambol market, Bishnupur district.

Additionally, another member of the organization was arrested on June 13 in connection with this case. Recent protests in Manipur saw demonstrators violating curfews and clashing with security forces across several districts in the Imphal valley. Protesters have been demanding the unconditional release of Arambai Tengol leader Kanan Singh and four others.

The police have urged everyone, particularly the youth, to refrain from engaging in illegal and anti-social activities, warning that such actions could have legal repercussions that may adversely affect their future and career prospects. Since May 2023, ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo groups has resulted in over 260 fatalities and left thousands displaced.
