Five French Activists Arrested by Israel During Gaza Aid Mission

In a recent incident, five French activists were detained by Israeli authorities while attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. The activists were aboard the Madleen, a ship intercepted in international waters. One activist has opted for voluntary departure, while the others face forced expulsion. The situation escalated with the involvement of Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, who was also among those detained. The Freedom Flotilla Coalition has accused the Israeli military of unlawful actions during the interception. This event highlights ongoing tensions surrounding aid efforts in Gaza, which has been under a blockade for weeks.

Arrest of French Activists

On Tuesday, Jean-Noel Barrot, France’s foreign minister, announced that Israeli authorities have detained five French activists, who are set to appear before an Israeli judge.

‘One Activist Opts for Voluntary Departure’

Barrot shared on social media that the French consul met with the six detained nationals. Their families have been informed, and one individual has chosen to leave voluntarily, expected to return today. The remaining five will face a forced expulsion process.

Humanitarian Aid Ship Intercepted

The Israeli government intercepted the Madleen, a ship carrying humanitarian supplies intended for Gaza, which had the six French activists aboard. This interception occurred in international waters, and the vessel was redirected to Ashdod port.

Detention of International Volunteers

In addition to the French activists, 12 international volunteers, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, were also detained. Organizers reported that the ship was intercepted while attempting to deliver essential aid to Gaza.

Medical Check and Allegations of Military Action

Following their detention, the Israeli defense forces confirmed the arrests and conducted medical examinations on the detainees.

Freedom Flotilla Coalition's Claims

The Freedom Flotilla Coalition (FFC), which coordinated the mission, accused the Israeli military of unlawfully boarding the ship in international waters. They claimed the ship was targeted while trying to deliver baby formula, food, and medical supplies to Gaza, which has been under an aid blockade for 11 weeks.

Reports indicate that Israeli quadcopters sprayed a white substance on the ship, disrupted communications, and broadcast unsettling noises. Activist Yasemin Acar documented the substance affecting her eyes during a livestream. In a pre-recorded message, Thunberg stated, 'If you see this video, we have been intercepted and kidnapped in international waters by the Israeli occupational forces, or forces that support Israel.'
