Firefighting Helicopter Crashes While Battling Utah Wildfire

Los Angeles, Aug 8: A firefighting helicopter met with an accident on Friday while engaged in efforts to control a significant wildfire in Utah, as reported by local authorities.
The Sikorsky S-64 helicopter, which had two individuals on board, went down near Richfield, Utah, at approximately 10 a.m. local time (1700 GMT), according to the US Federal Aviation Administration.
Fire officials indicated that the crash occurred close to the Widemouth 2 Fire, which is currently the second-largest wildfire of the 2026 season in Utah, according to reports from a news agency.
Emergency responders were quickly dispatched to the crash site, although details regarding the condition of the two occupants have not yet been disclosed.
The US Forest Service at Fishlake National Forest confirmed via social media that emergency teams are actively responding to the situation.
They stated, "Our primary focus is on addressing the incident. Local, state, and federal agencies are collaborating in the response efforts." They also urged the public to remain patient as they prioritize safety and will provide updates as information becomes available.
The wildfire, which was ignited by lightning on July 27, has scorched over 105,000 acres (approximately 425 square kilometers) and is currently 19% contained, as per Utah Fire Info, the state's interagency wildfire information resource.
Over 600 firefighting personnel are engaged in combating the fire, which has led to evacuations and the destruction of at least six structures as it spreads through timber, brush, and grasslands.
In a related incident earlier in June, four firefighters lost their lives and another was injured when they were caught in a rapidly advancing wildfire in Colorado. The crew attempted to shield themselves using emergency fire shelters as the flames approached.
