Final Notice Issued to Rabri Devi to Vacate Government Residence
Rabri Devi Ordered to Vacate Government Quarters
The Bihar Building Construction Department has issued a final notice to former Chief Minister Rabri Devi, instructing her to vacate her government residence located at 10 Circular Road by June 29. Failure to comply will result in legal action under the Bihar Government Premises Act. This notice, dated June 22, provides a seven-day deadline for her to clear the premises. It states that if she does not vacate within this timeframe, strict measures will be enforced according to regulations. The department also referenced a previous reminder sent to Rabri Devi and mentioned that an alternative government residence has been allocated at 39 Harding Road.
Previous Notices and Rabri Devi's Response
Rabri Devi had previously received a notice in May 2026, giving her a 15-day period to vacate the Circular Road bungalow. On May 29, the Bihar government formally requested the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader to clear the government property. Despite the government's directives, Rabri Devi stated to reporters that she would not vacate the residence, asserting that they could call in force if necessary, but she would remain.
Political Significance of the Residence
The bungalow at 10 Circular Road has long been associated with the family of RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav. Rabri Devi served as the Chief Minister while residing there, making it a significant political address for the RJD. Commenting on the ongoing dispute regarding Rabri Devi's government residence, Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Chaudhary remarked that public representatives should not have an excessive attachment to government accommodations.
Chaudhary's Views on Government Housing
Chaudhary expressed that some individuals have a strong attachment to government housing. He mentioned that his son, mother, and father each require separate homes. He stated that the moment his party and leaders inform him that his work is complete, he would vacate within 24 hours. The Chief Minister also praised Nitish Kumar, noting that Kumar vacated his government residence immediately after taking office. Chaudhary said, "I became Chief Minister on April 15, and by May 1, Nitish Kumar had already moved out and into another house. I want to thank him for that."
