Guwahati Bids Adieu to a Cultural Legend


Guwahati, Sept 23: The second autopsy of the beloved cultural figure Zubeen Garg was conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) early Tuesday morning, as Assam prepared for the final farewell to one of its cherished icons.


The body of the artist arrived at GMCH around 6:50 AM, where a specialized team of four doctors performed the examination.


This team comprised experts from Gauhati Medical College, Pragjyotishpur Medical College, and specialists from AIIMS, ensuring thorough medical evaluation.


Officials from the state and district administration, along with Assam Police and health department representatives, were present during the autopsy.


Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma was among the first to pay his respects, laying floral tributes to the late musician before the body was transported to the hospital.


“The last two days have showcased the immense love and admiration Zubeen received from the people of Assam. There will never be another Zubeen,” the Chief Minister expressed on a microblogging platform.


After the autopsy was completed, the remains were taken back to Sarusajai Stadium before proceeding directly to Kamarakuchi in Sonapur for the final rites.

A special ambulance, similar to the one that transported the body from the airport to Sarusajai, has been arranged for the journey.


This ambulance will be closely followed by family members of Garg, while thousands of mourners are expected to gather along the route for a final farewell.


Preparations for the cremation at Kamarakuchi have been finalized. The rites will be conducted by priests Tushar Bhagawati and Pankal Sharma, with Garg’s sister Pami Borthakur playing a significant role, alongside Arun Garg and Rahul Gautam Sharma.


The past two days have seen an overwhelming expression of grief throughout Assam. From everyday citizens to fellow artists, many have come together in large numbers to pay tribute to a man whose voice and artistry shaped a generation.


As the procession prepares to head to the samadhikhetra, Assam is set to say an emotional goodbye to Zubeen Garg — a voice that will eternally resonate in the hearts of the state’s people.
