FIFA President Pays Tribute to Deceased Portuguese Players

During Portugal's inaugural match in the FIFA World Cup 2026 against DR Congo in Houston, FIFA President Gianni Infantino met with Joaquim Silva and Isabel Silva, the grieving parents of the late Portuguese footballers Diogo Jota and Andre Silva.

Diogo Jota tragically lost his life in a car accident in Spain last July at the young age of 28. His brother, Andre Silva, was also involved in the accident and did not survive.

Infantino expressed his condolences through a heartfelt Instagram post, describing the encounter as a poignant moment of remembrance amidst the tournament. He stated, "I was honored to meet Joaquim Silva and Isabel Silva - the parents of late Portuguese brothers Diogo Jota and Andre Silva - before Portugal's opening FIFA World Cup game against Congo DR in Houston."

He continued, "Representing @portugal at this tournament was a dream Diogo cherished with everyone who loved him. While we celebrate these moments of unity, we keep Diogo and Andre in our thoughts. Thank you for allowing us to welcome you."

This gesture was part of a broader tribute from teams and officials, as the football community shared emotional messages honoring the late players throughout the tournament.

Portugal's World Cup Campaign Begins with a Draw

In other news, Portugal faced a challenging start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup journey, settling for a 1-1 draw against a determined DR Congo team.

Considered one of the favorites before the tournament, Portugal initially took the lead when Joao Neves scored with a header just six minutes into the match, suggesting a potential easy victory.

However, DR Congo found their rhythm and equalized just before halftime, with Yoane Wissa scoring a powerful header from a corner, marking the nation's first-ever goal in World Cup history.

Cristiano Ronaldo, participating in his sixth World Cup, had a subdued performance and was unable to make a significant impact, resulting in a disappointing draw.
