FBI Thwarts Alleged Attack Plot on UFC Freedom 250 Event in Washington, DC
Major Security Threat Averted
Washington DC: A significant security threat was neutralized as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and various law enforcement agencies intervened in an alleged plot aimed at the UFC Freedom 250 event scheduled for this weekend in Washington, DC. Reports indicate that at least five individuals were detained by Monday (June 15), with investigations revealing that around 23 individuals were identified as potential conspirators behind the planned attack.
Officials disclosed that the suspected scheme involved the use of drones equipped with explosives targeting buildings near the event, which could have led to mass evacuations and potentially directed fleeing attendees towards a sniper unit set up in advance.
Additionally, the attackers purportedly had a "second wave" plan that included an attempt to breach the gates of the White House. The FBI became aware of the threat on June 10, prompting a search operation to apprehend the suspects, with one being arrested in Cincinnati.
Investigators uncovered Signal chats among the suspects, where they allegedly discussed their intentions to attack the UFC event. Further analysis of one suspect's iPhone revealed that discussions about the attack involved at least 23 Signal users. Some suspects even planned to travel to Fredericksburg, Virginia, on June 12 or 13 to finalize their preparations.
One of the detained individuals reportedly indicated that their targets were "capitalist elites." The investigation saw the involvement of 12 FBI field offices, and FBI Director Kash Patel commended the agency, the Department of Justice, and other law enforcement bodies for preventing a potential disaster. Approximately 4,300 attendees were present at the event, including 1,200 active-duty service members, with around 12 fighters competing from various parts of the globe on Sunday (June 14).
