Early Life of Fauja Singh
Born on April 1, 1911, in Beas Pind, a village in Jalandhar, Punjab, which was then part of British India, Fauja was the youngest of five siblings. He faced significant physical challenges early in life, not being able to walk until he was five years old. Even as he grew older, he struggled with weak legs that limited his mobility.
Personal Losses and Resilience
Fauja's life was marked by personal tragedies, including the death of his wife, Gian Kaur, in 1992, which prompted his move to East London. The loss of his son, Kuldip, in 1994, deeply affected him. To cope with his grief, he took up jogging, which became a significant part of his life.
A Marathon Legacy
At the age of 89, Fauja Singh began to take running more seriously. He made his marathon debut in the London Marathon in 2000, completing it in an impressive 6 hours and 54 minutes. He went on to participate in marathons in New York, Toronto, and Mumbai, achieving his personal best at the 2003 Toronto Waterfront Marathon with a time of 5 hours and 40 minutes, a remarkable accomplishment for someone in their 90s.
The Turbaned Tornado's Historic Achievements
Known as the 'Turbaned Tornado,' Fauja Singh proudly represented Sikh culture on the global stage. In 2011, at the age of 100, he made history at the Ontario Masters Association event in Toronto, where he set eight world records in a single day within the 100+ age category. His life story was captured in a biography titled 'Turbaned Tornado,' written by Khushwant Singh and published on July 7, 2011. Additionally, a biopic titled 'Fauja' was announced in 2021, directed by Omung Kumar B.
Global Recognition and Impact
In 2003, Fauja Singh became the first non-American recipient of the Ellis Island Medal of Honor, recognized for his efforts in promoting racial harmony. He also gained fame as the oldest individual featured in a PETA campaign advocating for animal rights and healthy living. His popularity soared further when he appeared in a commercial alongside legends David Beckham and Muhammad Ali.
