Fast-Track Court Established for Zubeen Garg Case: Family Seeks Justice
Guwahati Welcomes Fast-Track Court Decision
Guwahati, Feb 27: In response to the Assam Cabinet's recent decision to set up a dedicated fast-track court for the ongoing trial concerning the late cultural figure Zubeen Garg, his spouse, Garima Garg, expressed her approval on Friday. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that justice is served in a transparent and fair manner.
Garima stated, “We had been advocating for the case related to Zubeen Garg to be expedited through a fast-track court. This was a collective desire. The Special Investigation Team (SIT) has submitted the charge sheet within three months and has handled the case appropriately.”
She further remarked that a fair trial would reveal the truth surrounding the incident. “We are already aware of who is responsible and the circumstances of the event. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has indicated that the incident was premeditated. We want complete transparency in court and for the perpetrator to face severe penalties promptly,” she added.
Garima also noted that no one who cherished Zubeen Garg wishes for the accused to receive bail, expressing her hope that the court would prioritize this case. “I trust that the court will approach this matter with integrity and fairness. Those accountable must be punished,” she stated.
On Thursday, the Chief Minister announced that the state government would formally petition the Gauhati High Court to establish a specialized sessions court under Section 346(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita for daily hearings in this case.
“The Cabinet has sanctioned the creation of a dedicated court for the continuous trial of this case. We will submit a request to the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court, who will then decide on the court's formation and the proceedings,” Sarma explained.
According to the decision, the Gauhati High Court will appoint a judge and provide the necessary guidelines for the special court's operation. The state government will ensure all logistical and infrastructural support needed for seamless proceedings.
