Farveez Maharoof Highlights Sri Lanka's Need for Consistency Ahead of India Test Series
Consistency is Key for Sri Lanka
Former Sri Lankan all-rounder Farveez Maharoof emphasized the necessity for the Lankan Lions to enhance their consistency in Test cricket. He pointed out that veteran batter Dinesh Chandimal will play a crucial role in the upcoming two-Test series against India at home.
Importance of the Upcoming Series
As part of the expert panel for India's Test tour of Sri Lanka, which kicks off on August 15 on Sony Sports Network, Maharoof discussed the importance of consistency. Sri Lanka has previously finished seventh, fifth, and sixth in the last three World Test Championship (WTC) cycles. He believes this series presents a prime opportunity for skipper Dhananjaya de Silva to secure a victory against India at home, especially since India has won the last two Test series in Sri Lanka in 2015 and 2017, with their last defeat occurring in 2008.
Need for Improvement
During a media interaction, Maharoof stated, "Sri Lanka must focus on being more consistent, both individually and as a team. The soft dismissals in the recent Antigua Test against West Indies were particularly disappointing. The essence of Test cricket is to endure challenges on various surfaces." He expressed a desire to see more determination and consistency from the top order, noting that while Sri Lanka will miss Angelo Matthews, emerging talents like Kamindu Mendis and the leadership of Dhananjaya provide hope. Maharoof remarked, "This is their best chance to defeat India at home, a rare achievement for Sri Lanka."
Chandimal's Crucial Role
Dinesh Chandimal, a seasoned player, has a commendable record against India, having scored 750 runs in eight Tests at an average of 50.00, including two centuries and three fifties. Maharoof believes that as a 92-Test veteran, Chandimal's experience will be vital. He stated, "Chandimal should bat at number three as he is the most experienced player and a former captain. His past performances against top bowlers like Ravichandran Ashwin will serve as motivation. The concentration required in humid conditions will be a test for all batters, but Chandimal knows what it takes to succeed against India."

This series is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle. Currently, India is positioned fifth in the WTC standings with four wins and four losses from nine matches, achieving a Points Percentage (PCT) of 48.150. Sri Lanka ranks sixth, with one win, one draw, and two losses.
