Farmers Protest in Haryana: Demands for Trade Agreement Cancellation and Compensation
Intensifying Political Climate in Haryana
The political landscape in Haryana has once again heated up due to farmers' demands. On Monday, ten major farmer organizations initiated a massive three-day protest in Kurukshetra, voicing their various demands. Amid heavy security and police presence, thousands of farmers took to the streets, chanting slogans against the government.
Protest Details and Government Response
Thousands of farmers gathered at Tau Devi Lal Park in the morning and later marched towards the Chief Minister's camp office. However, they were halted by police at Jindal Chowk, where barricades were set up. Consequently, the protesters sat on the road, raising slogans against the government, while a significant police force was deployed at the scene.
Three-Day Protest with Key Demands
Farmer leaders announced that the protest would continue for three days. Mandeep Singh Sirsa, a farmer leader, highlighted that one of their primary demands is the cancellation of the India-U.S. trade agreement. He also mentioned other demands, including waiving electricity bills for farmers and providing compensation for crop losses.
Main Demands: Dispute Over Trade Agreement with the U.S.
Mandeep Singh Sirsa clarified that this movement is not limited to local issues but also targets international trade policies. The farmers' key demands include:
Cancellation of India-U.S. Trade Agreement: The farmers' foremost demand is the immediate cancellation of agricultural trade agreements with the U.S., fearing adverse effects on the domestic market.
Waiver of Electricity Bills: A complete waiver of outstanding electricity bills for farmers in the state is being sought.
Crop Compensation: A call for fair and prompt compensation for crop losses due to natural disasters or other causes.
