High Voter Engagement in Falta Assembly Repoll

Kolkata: The repolling event in the Falta Assembly constituency of West Bengal on Thursday witnessed an impressive turnout, with over 74% of the 236,000 registered voters casting their ballots by 3 PM, according to an official from the election commission.

The electorate consists of 121,300 males, 115,135 females, and nine individuals identifying as third-gender. Voting commenced at 7 AM and is set to continue until 6 PM.

In response to allegations of extensive EVM tampering during the initial polling on April 29, the Election Commission significantly increased security measures for this repoll.

Approximately 35 companies of central forces are deployed across 285 polling booths to facilitate a smooth voting process. Additionally, 30 Quick Response Teams are on standby to address any potential disturbances.

"Polling has proceeded without incident in Falta. We have not received any reports of issues from the constituency. As of 3 PM, the voter turnout stands at 74.10%," stated the election official.

Voters were seen forming long lines outside the polling stations since early morning.

While six candidates are officially contesting for the seat, Trinamool Congress candidate Jahangir Khan recently declared his withdrawal from the race, a decision characterized by the party as personal.

Political tensions have been palpable in the constituency since the April 29 polling, following complaints from various booths regarding the application of perfume substances and adhesive tapes on EVMs, which led to the cancellation of the initial elections.
