Faf du Plessis Lauds Jasprit Bumrah's Impact in India's T20 World Cup Victory
India's Thrilling Semifinal Win
Former South African cricketer Faf du Plessis has praised Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah following his outstanding performance that led India to a narrow seven-run victory over England in the T20 World Cup 2026 semifinal held at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium. Du Plessis likened having Bumrah on the team to possessing a genie.
Match Highlights
In this semifinal encounter, India set a formidable target of 253 runs for England, bolstered by Sanju Samson's explosive innings of 89 runs off 42 balls. England, driven by Jacob Bethell's century, seemed poised to chase down the target. However, the match shifted dramatically when Bumrah bowled a remarkable 18th over, allowing only six runs while England required 45 runs from the last three overs. Hardik Pandya then maintained the pressure with an exceptional over, conceding just nine runs and taking the wicket of Sam Curran. Ultimately, India restricted England to 246 runs, clinching the match by a mere seven runs.
Bumrah: A Captain's Dream
During an appearance on ESPNcricinfo's TimeOut show, du Plessis expressed that India is incredibly fortunate to have Bumrah, highlighting his match-winning capabilities across formats. He stated, "Team India doesn't realize how lucky they are to have him. Time and again, he proves that he can win games. It's a superpower any captain dreams of; it's like having a genie—just rub the lamp, and out comes Bumrah."
The Enigma of Bumrah's Bowling Style
Du Plessis elaborated on the challenges batters face against Bumrah, noting that even when he misses his length, batsmen find it hard to capitalize, which is often not the case with other bowlers. He remarked, "In that last over, they expect full deliveries, yorkers, or slower balls. Bumrah bowled two low full tosses, and Sam Curran was late on both. Any other bowler missing length like that would concede six runs."
He further explained, "Bumrah's unique action makes it difficult to gauge how quickly the ball is released from his wrist. This skill, combined with the mystery of his bowling style, makes it challenging for batsmen to line him up, similar to what Lasith Malinga achieved in his prime."
In the semifinal, Bumrah's impressive bowling figures stood at 1 wicket for 33 runs in four overs, contributing significantly to a match that saw a total of 499 runs scored.
