Faf du Plessis Highlights Challenges for West Indies Spinners in T20 World Cup
Du Plessis Commends West Indies Spin Duo
Faf du Plessis, the former captain of South Africa, has lauded the West Indies spin pair, Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie, for their impressive performance against Zimbabwe in the T20 World Cup. However, he cautions that facing teams like South Africa and India will truly test their skills.
West Indies Triumph Over Zimbabwe
In their opening Super 8 match of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2026 at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium, the West Indies achieved a remarkable victory, defeating Zimbabwe by 107 runs. Hosein and Motie collectively claimed seven wickets for just 56 runs across eight overs.
Du Plessis's Insights on Spin Bowling
"I have seen them play in South Africa and have faced both of them in numerous matches. They are exceptional spinners. If the pitch offers any assistance, they will take full advantage. The real challenge will arise when they encounter a lineup with many left-handed batsmen in India. South Africa managed to handle them quite well during the T20I series earlier this year," du Plessis remarked, as reported by a sports news outlet.
West Indies Set New Records
The West Indies posted an impressive total of 254 runs for 6 wickets in their 20 overs, marking the second-highest score in T20 World Cup history, just behind Sri Lanka's 260 against Kenya in 2007. This score also stands as the highest T20I total against Zimbabwe, surpassing India's previous record of 234 runs set in Harare in 2024.
Individual Performances
Hosein excelled during the powerplay, securing two wickets and finishing with figures of 3 for 28. Meanwhile, Motie made an impact after the powerplay, taking the wicket of Dion Myers in his first over and concluding with 4 for 28, including two wickets in consecutive deliveries.
Next Matches for West Indies
The West Indies are set to face South Africa in Ahmedabad on Thursday, followed by a match against India in Kolkata on Sunday.
