Internal divisions within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have become evident in Himachal Pradesh's Kangra district, as a significant political clash has arisen between former minister Rakesh Pathania and Kangra MP Rajeev Bhardwaj, just ahead of the Zila Parishad elections.
This political discord follows the BJP's disappointing performance in the Nurpur Municipal Council elections, raising concerns about increasing factionalism in a region that holds considerable political weight in the state.
The controversy ignited when candidates aligned with Pathania entered the Zila Parishad election fray against those endorsed by the BJP, prompting a strong reaction from the party's parliamentary leadership. This situation has heightened political tensions in the Nurpur and Fatehpur areas, where both leaders wield significant influence.
During a press conference on Thursday, Pathania positioned himself as a loyal and disciplined member of the BJP while subtly criticizing the local leadership, including the MLA and the current MP.
"I am a committed worker and soldier of the BJP. The distribution of tickets and political fluctuations are part of public life, but my bond with the party and organization remains unbroken," Pathania stated, emphasizing that the BJP has provided him with identity, recognition, and a platform to serve the community.
Nonetheless, he expressed dissatisfaction with the current political dynamics in the area, claiming that developmental initiatives from his tenure were being politicized instead of being advanced for the public good.
In a strategic move to rally support from his traditional base, Pathania highlighted that development projects worth approximately ₹5.75 crore had been launched in the Nurpur region over the last two years. He also advocated for the revival of the long-defunct Kangra Valley railway service, calling it essential for regional connectivity, tourism, and economic growth.
Without directly naming Pathania, MP Rajeev Bhardwaj vehemently criticized what he referred to as "anti-party activities" and "internal sabotage," indicating that the BJP leadership is taking these developments seriously.
"The BJP is a disciplined, organization-driven party. Any attempts to undermine the organization for personal gain will not be tolerated," Bhardwaj asserted.
The MP claimed that supporting candidates against the officially endorsed BJP nominees in the Zila Parishad elections constituted indiscipline and political treachery. He cautioned that those engaging in actions harmful to the party's interests would be exposed to the public and could face disciplinary measures.
"In a party that has provided leaders with recognition, respect, and a political platform, working against official candidates is nothing less than betrayal," Bhardwaj remarked, noting that the BJP has been built on the dedication and hard work of its members.
He further suggested that the issue might escalate to the party's disciplinary committee, hinting that leadership may adopt a stringent approach towards dissent perceived as detrimental to the organization, especially with crucial grassroots elections on the horizon.
In response, Pathania quickly countered, dismissing any claims that he was acting against the party. He firmly stated that no one has the right to question his loyalty to the BJP and accused certain leaders of attempting to damage his political reputation.
"I have consistently worked to fortify the party and organization. If anyone is trying to label me as anti-party, that is entirely false. The public is aware of who has genuinely contributed to the development of Nurpur and Fatehpur and who is merely engaging in political rhetoric," he asserted.
Pathania also suggested that there are deeper political currents within the district's BJP unit, asserting that voters are closely monitoring recent events and will express their opinions at the appropriate time.
The escalating public dispute between these two senior BJP figures has revealed significant fractures within the party's Kangra unit at a critical political moment. With local body and panchayati raj elections poised to influence the organizational atmosphere ahead of future Assembly and parliamentary contests, the ongoing power struggle in Nurpur is seen as a crucial test for the BJP's central and state leadership in navigating regional aspirations and internal dissent.
Political analysts believe that the confrontation between Pathania and Bhardwaj signifies more than just a local electoral dispute; it represents a broader struggle for political relevance and organizational control in the influential Kangra district, often viewed as a gateway to power in Himachal Pradesh.
