Explosions at Abandoned Clubhouse in Kolkata Cause Alarm
Minor Explosions Create Panic in North Kolkata
Kolkata, March 7: On Saturday morning, a series of minor explosions occurred at a deserted clubhouse in north Kolkata, leading to widespread panic among residents. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, according to police officials.
As per police reports, the explosions took place around 7 a.m. at the closed clubhouse located on 1/2 C Gangulipara Lane in Paikpara. The blasts were powerful enough to dislodge the tin roof of the building, which subsequently fell onto the roof of a nearby multi-storey structure.
Local residents speculated that a crude bomb had been left inside the abandoned clubhouse. Some suggested that ongoing disputes among promoters might have contributed to the incident.
Authorities have launched an investigation to uncover any underlying causes for the explosions, especially with the state Assembly elections approaching.
Witnesses reported being startled awake by the blasts, claiming to have heard at least five loud explosions. They observed that the clubhouse's tin roof had been blown off, and the door was also destroyed, with flames visible inside the damaged club.
Residents promptly alerted the Chitpur police station, and the bomb squad was dispatched to the scene. Officers from both the bomb squad and dog unit arrived quickly to conduct an investigation.
The clubhouse and its surrounding area were slated for development into a housing complex, and locals indicated that disputes over this project might have led to the incident. The clubhouse had been closed for approximately six to seven months, although it was reportedly frequented by outsiders from time to time. Residents speculated that this could have led to someone storing explosives in the abandoned facility.
In the aftermath of the explosions, locals have called for increased police presence in the area and the installation of CCTV cameras around the clubhouse. The police are actively investigating the situation.
