The Karni Mata Temple is notable for housing more than 25,000 rats, which are considered the offspring of the goddess. Visitors to the temple are often astonished by the sheer number of these creatures that roam freely within its premises.

Unique Rules for Visitors

Devotees visiting the temple must adhere to specific guidelines, such as dragging their feet instead of lifting them while walking. This practice is intended to prevent any rats from being accidentally stepped on, as harming them is believed to bring bad luck.

The Sacred White Rats

In addition to the common black rats, the temple is also home to a few white rats, which are regarded as particularly sacred. It is said that the offerings made to the goddess are consumed by these rats, and devotees consider the remnants as blessed prasad. Visitors often bring peanuts and milk to feed the rats, further emphasizing their revered status.

The Legend of Karni Mata

Karni Mata, also known as Maa Jagdamba, is associated with a fascinating legend. According to popular belief, when her son, along with her husband and sister's son, drowned in the Kapil Sarovar, she fervently prayed to Yama, the god of death, to restore her son's life. Yama eventually granted her wish, but her son was reborn as a rat.
