Nestled at an elevation of 10,000 feet in the Parvati Valley, Malana is often referred to as one of the most mysterious villages in India. It is recognized globally as 'the oldest democracy in the world.' However, this village has gained attention for some unusual customs.
One of the most peculiar laws here prohibits touching any resident of Malana. A violation, even if accidental, incurs a hefty fine of 5,000 rupees and results in permanent expulsion from the village. The locals believe they are descendants of Alexander's soldiers, and they speak a unique language called 'Kanashi,' which is not found anywhere else.
In Malana, neither the Indian Constitution nor the Himachal Pradesh police hold sway. The villagers adhere strictly to the laws of their deity, Jamghatta.
Understanding the Village's Governance
Malana operates under its own legal system, featuring a parliament of 11 members divided into upper and lower houses. Decisions regarding crimes are made through divine intervention, with two possible outcomes: poison or truth. The path chosen by the deity determines the verdict.
A distinctive aspect of this community is the strict prohibition against touching the villagers. They consider themselves a pure race, viewing outsiders as 'untouchables.' Thus, any physical contact is believed to pollute their community, leading to the establishment of this rule.
Consequences of Breaking the Rules
Shaking hands with a Malanvi is forbidden, as is touching their homes or walking on their paths. If someone purchases items from a shop, they must handle them themselves, as the villagers do not touch them. Breaking these rules results in significant fines, which have increased from 1,000 to 5,000 rupees. Additionally, villagers are not allowed outside after 8 PM. While women cannot vote in elections, they can participate in decision-making. This news is being reported by a Media House.
